Astronomical Catalogs

interface by D. A. Clarke -- using HTML, sybtcl, and Sybase

Nota Bene
In the years since this resource was first placed online, many advances have been made at other sites offering astronomical catalogs. We don't actively maintain these catalog pages, and some of the data sets are getting old. If you want the latest up-to-date information, check out both of which offer WWW access to all their catalogs and the associated documentation. The CDS in particular has a sophisticated browser interface which permits custom queries. Over 2300 catalogs are accessible by this means.

If you are still attached to the Lick catalog pages for some reason (i.e. there is something special about the type of queries we offer which particularly attracts you), then send mail to webmaster (below). Unless there is some unique feature of our pages which people find useful, we'll probably shut them down sometime before Jan 1 2000.

We now return you to the original text of this page:
This page is now production -- If you have a problem using it, please let webmaster know. Feel free to send suggestions and comments also to webmaster, as this interface is still evolving rapidly.

NOTE that most of these pages use HTML3 for proper column alignment, and that some viewers will not be able to handle this. When in doubt, use Netscape 1.1 (installed for sun4 and alpha at Lick). If you feel strongly that HTML2 versions should be offered as well, write to webmaster.

Some catalogs include images of objects, which may appear as a field value along with the rest of the catalog data, or which may appear out to the right of each record. You will need an appropriate viewer for the type of image file (FITS, for example) in order to view these images. Some catalogs may contain brief code values in certain columns, which require a key for easy interpretation. Where possible, I have provided this key as a hyperlink in the column header in your output page.

Caveats: Data dictionary information may not exist for all catalogs; recently added catalogs may not be in the official "list of catalogs".

Except for the Sybase relational database engine which is managing the catalog data tables, this application relies entirely on free software. It can be modified and extended (within the limits of our resources and ability) so send in your suggestions for improvements, including the whereabouts and nature of catalogs which would be of use to you in your research or catalogs of your own data which you would like to publish here.
